Will Jarrett AUSTIN, TEXAS Wilbur (Will) D. Jarrett, beloved husband, father, "papa" and "grandpa," died Saturday, June 15, 2024, from a long battle with Alzheimer's. He will be remembered for his advocacy and loyalty to his friends and family, his quick wit and wry sense of humor that powered his gift for storytelling and his journalistic intuition. Once described as a "rough - hewn West Texan" by D Magazine, Will was born on December 5, 1935 to parents, Wilbur S. and Ethel Lucille Jarrett in Odessa, Texas and grew up on "oil camps" in neighboring Penwell. At Odessa High School, Will excelled on the tennis team and won high school journalism awards before graduating as the youngest in his class at 17, in 1953. He was selected as a Distinguished Former Odessan by the Heritage Society in 1994. Will spent one year in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets before transferring to Texas Tech to major in journalism. In 1998, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the university for "his significant enhancement to the excellence of Texas Tech University through outstanding achievement and dedicated service." He and his wife set up the Will & Renee Jarrett Scholarship Endowment for Tech journalism students. At Tech, he was sports editor of the Toreador before taking his first job as sports editor at the Artesia (N.M.) Daily Press and then at the Santa Fe New Mexican. In 1958, Will was drafted by the U.S. Army and spent two years stationed in West Germany near the Czechoslovakian border. Upon his honorable discharge, he resumed his job at the New Mexican before working at two newspapers in Phoenix, Ariz. He was hired at the Miami Herald in 1963, where he held positions of assistant state editor and assistant news editor. In 1970, Will was transferred by the Herald's parent company, Knight - Ridder, to the Philadelphia Inquirer. For the next five years, he held the positions of assistant to the executive editor and managing editor, principally in charge of sections appearing in the Sunday Inquirer. Will got the chance to return to his home state in 1975 when he was hired to fill the managing editor role at the Dallas Times Herald, in charge of all news, features and the newspaper's two bureaus in Washington, D.C. and Austin. From 1981 to 1986, he served as editor in chief for both the Herald and the Denver Post. His newsrooms were described as "exciting, tense, mean, funny, crackling, explosive - full of people who wanted to fight, wanted to win, wanted to see somebody else go down" with a focus on investigative local journalism, not afraid of taking on a rogue mayor, city council corruption or police improprieties. He led staffs to two Pulitzer Prizes in Dallas and Denver. He was always fond of talking about "newspaper wars" in Denver and Dallas in the late 1970s and 1980s. In 2012, he was named one of the Dallas Press Club's "Legend of North Texas Journalism." Whether on the golf course or during a newsroom softball game, Will always enjoyed a lively competition. He never shied away from giving you his opinion on politics, college football or the state of journalism. In the later part of his career, Will formed Westward Communications Inc. in 1986 with his long - time friend Ken Johnson. They built a chain of more than 50 daily and weekly newspapers in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Colorado. After Westward was sold in 1997, Will enjoyed retirement spending time with friends and family, fishing for golf balls with his grandchildren and playing golf at Preston Trail Country Club. He founded the Fourth Estate Golf Society (FEGS), whose membership was composed of editors who gathered annually to pursue experiences on golf courses around the country. He married the love of his life, Renée Murphy, in 1964, living their retired life in Dallas, Palm Springs and Vail, always chasing the best weather of the seasons. Will is survived by his son, Jason Jarrett and wife, Christine, of Austin, Texas; daughter Jennifer Mudd of Round Rock, Texas; and his grandchildren, Juliet, Will and Charlie Jarrett, of Austin; and McKenzie, McCoy and Mitchell Mudd of Round Rock. He was preceded in death by his wife, Renée.

Ron was born December 14,1934 in Snyder, TX to Tom and Evelyn Farquhar. He married Loretta Bennett June 21, 1958 in Big Spring, TX. They were the parents of three children, Mark, Lori and Kristi. Ron and Loretta were married 59 years before Loretta passed away on March 23, 2018. They were members of the Church of Christ and also attended the First Christian Church in Big Spring. Ronald spent his formative years in Big Spring, where he graduated high school and went on to attend and play football for the University of Texas at Arlington. During one of his visits home, he saw a young girl while cruising the drag. When he went to her house to visit, her father asked how old he was and after he declared he was a junior, Roy Bennett asked, "In high school?" No sir, but it all worked out after Roy found out he was Tom Farquhar's boy! Ron and Loretta married right after she graduated from high school and moved to California where Ron served in the Marine Corps. Mark was born during this busy time, while Ron achieved the rank of Sergeant E5 and graduated first in his class from Electronic Technician School. After serving in the military, the family lived in Big Spring and Snyder and landed in Lubbock where Lori was born. A move to Hobbs, NM propelled Ron into the oil field equipment business with Watson Trucks. It was during this time that Kristi was born. In the early 1970's, Ron moved his family to Odessa and went to work for Treanor Equipment Co. Selling CAT equipment and engines was a highlight for him. He was manager of the industrial engine division and specialized in sales and design of power packages for drilling rigs. Ron ended his career with CAT and owned and operated Chaparral Trucks in Odessa and Lubbock for 15 years. Ron and Loretta eventually retired and moved back to their home, Big Spring. During his lifetime, Ron was passionate about serving the community. He served on boards for the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, Boom Town, Leadership Odessa, Good Samaritans, ECISD curriculum, United Way, American Cancer Society, Better Business Bureau and the Texas Motor Truck Association. Ron was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, serving on boards for the Buffalo Trail Council and the Comanche Trail District. These are only a few of the avenues that Ron used to serve his community. He was especially proud of his work to help pass the bond needed to build Ratliff Stadium and to promote the building and expansion of UTPB, both in Odessa. During his retirement years, Ron served as the Republican County Chairman for Howard County. Loretta was integral in helping Ron to accomplish all his goals. She was his helpmate and partner. They hosted friends and business associates in their home and Loretta traveled with Ron for any business trip taken. Later in life, they became known as Nanny and Pap to their grandchildren. Life was spent at Colorado City Lake, sporting and rodeo events, dance recitals and the never ending search for wildflowers. He enjoyed photography and documented years of family adventures. They enjoyed trips back to California, Ruidoso, the Big Bend, and the panhandle of Florida. Ron was especially proud to have been included on the Texas South Plains Honor Flight in September 2019. Ron is preceded in death by his wife Ellen Loretta Farquhar, his parents Tom and Evelyn (Nisbett) Farquhar, his daughter and son - in - law Lori and Russell Grizzard, and his in - laws, Roy and Jolene (Taylor) Bennett.
